Acer's Predator gaming monitors come for your wallet, while laptops get the latest updates

This story is part of CES, where CNET covers the latest news on the most incredible tech coming soon.

Three new monitors stand out from Acer's crowd of gaming gear at CES 2022. Not as yowza as Alienware's QD-OLED debut, but with enough yes-I-may-want-it newness for the gamer who's OK spending $1,799 or more for a fast 32-inch 4K HDR monitor or $2,499 for a 48-inch OLED to pair with an Xbox Series X or PS5.

The veteran Predator X32 line welcomes two new members this year -- the, well, Predator X32 and Predator X32 FP. They use the same IPS panel, a DisplayHDR-1000 certified 4K screen with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and full coverage of the Adobe RGB color gamut and 1ms response time. A new 576-zone Mini LED backlight supplants older versions which had a lot more zones but also tended to generate a lot of heat. They also sport a thin bezel design and minimalist stand.

As the names might imply, though, they differ by some supplementary features. The $1,799 X32 FP uses FreeSync Pro for its variable refresh rate support, and its maximum native refresh rate is 160Hz, or 165Hz overclocked. The $1,999 X32 uses G-Sync Ultimate, which adds to the price and supplies support for Nvidia Reflex latency optimization technology, but G-Sync only works over DisplayPort. Its maximum refresh rate over DP is 160Hz, but over HDMI it's only 120Hz. And unless the specs I'm looking at are wrong, which is quite possible, the X32 only offers HDMI 2.0 connections (three of them) while the cheaper FreeSync model has four HDMI 2.1 connectors as well as a USB-C port with 90-watt power delivery.

The Predator CG48

Acer

The $2,499 Predator CG48 console monitor should offer all the usual benefits of OLED -- a large color gamut, high contrast and fast pixel response -- with a refresh rate of 138Hz in 4K. But seems like it might make some sacrifices. For instance, it's not clear how well it will handle HDR: Acer provides what sounds like a low peak brightness of 450 nits (and a native brightness of 135 nits, which is low) and says it supports HDR10, which means it can decode the stream but won't necessarily display it well.

It does have an HDMI 2.1 connection as well as 3 HDMI 2.0 and a USB hub, though it's odd that the USB-C can only charge up to 65 watts.

All the monitors will ship around October.

Acer also brought forth refreshes of its Nitro 5, Triton 500 SE and Predator Helios 300, but nothing really makes them stand out from the crowd on paper. They've all had minor makeovers to tone down the gaming vibe (but just a bit) and the Triton has slimmed down. The Triton will be marketed as a creator-focused laptop in some regions, so a more subtle style is warranted.

All get the usual upgrades to the newest versions of whichever processor and graphics card they use. That means the Nitro gets 12th-gen Intel Core H and AMD Ryzen 6000 H models, along with all the perks of the new platforms like support for DDR5.

Acer
  • The Predator Triton 500 SE ships in March, starting at $2,300
  • The Predator Helios 300 ships in May, start at $1,650 for the 15-inch model and the 17-inch ships in March starting at $1,750
  • The Acer Nitro 5 with Intel ships in March starting at $1,050 for the 15-inch and April starting at $1,100 for the 17-inch; with AMD the 15-inch ships in April starting at $1,100 and the 17-inch ships in May starting at $1,150

Nvidia's DLSS 2 aims to upscale its low-res reputation

Nvidia has slowly been climbing out of the reputational pit it dug with the initial release of DLSS, its AI-enhanced technology for upscaling games to run on higher-resolution displays without visual or framerate compromises. And with the second generation of the technology, it will presumably fix one of the last big disappointments: The way it works on screen resolutions lower than 4K.

DLSS, or Deep Learning Super-Sampling, uses cloud-based AI to simulate games at insanely high resolutions and teaches your GPU how to mimic that level of detail.

According to Nvidia, the upcoming DLSS 2.0 better leverages the Turing AI-acceleration cores of its RTX series of graphics processors to deliver faster performance at better quality for all resolutions. It also adds three quality options: Quality (native resolution), Balanced (one resolution-class down) and Performance (two resolution classes down) a la Control's source-resolution choices. So to output to a 4K display, for example, Quality would render at native resolution. Balanced would render at 1440p and upscale to 4K. Performance would start at 1080p and upscale.

The enhanced underlying algorithm now enables this process by feeding previous frame-render data back into the system instead of starting from scratch. That ostensibly allows it to improve detail, maintain smoother transitions from frame to frame and increase frame rates compared with rendering at the native resolution. It also makes the engine faster to train, which means we see more game developers get on board.

Earlier DLSS-supporting games don't automatically take advantage of 2.0 -- at minimum they'll require a patch. Control and MechWarrior 5 are among the first to roll out 2.0 support. You'll need to update your graphics driver as well, of course, to at least 472.75.

This is admittedly some pretty specialized news. If you need a refresher on GPUs and why they're important, see our guide to the best graphics cards for gamers and creatives

Secure your Windows 10 machine in 6 easy steps, here's how

As the Windows 10 May 2021 update rolls out to devices, it's a good time to secure your Windows 10 machine. Whether you have a new device or one you've recently upgraded (you can still download Windows 10 for free, by the way, now that support for Windows 7 has ended), making sure you're system is fully protected doesn't have to be complicated.

You can quickly enable some of the basic securityfeatures of the operating system -- and disable some of the more annoying ones -- without compromising your device, all within a few minutes.

Here's how to do it.

Read more: You can still download Windows 10 for free. Here's how

Create your save point

The first thing you should do with a new Windows 10 machine is enable a system restore. Think of it like a save point for your machine. If things go south while you're trying to set up a safer machine, you get to come back to this nice fresh install and start with a clean slate. Since it's disabled by default in Windows 10, you'll need to manually enable it by following these steps:

1. Go to the Windows Cortana search box and type system restore

2. Select the Control Panel and click Create a restore point

3. When the System Properties dialog box appears, click the System Protection tab.

4. Select the drive you've got Windows installed on. For most people this is going to be the C drive

5. Click Configure

6. Click Turn on system protection, then click OK.

From here on out, you can always come back to the System Properties box and click System Restore to bring your machine back to this moment in time.

Kill the bloatware

One of the most obnoxious things about getting a new Windows machine is that it's never really new. Even if your hands are the first to pull it out of its shiny box, both Microsoft and the manufacturer have already invariably stuffed your machine with barely-functional, unwanted, or trial-version software that will sit unused in your computer, taking up valuable memory space until it eventually becomes outdated and presents a quiet set of vulnerabilities. Let's kill those programs:

1. Go to Start, then to Settings, then to Apps

2. You should be looking at a list of all of your installed apps under your Apps & Features section. A right-click on any of them should present you with the option to uninstall them.

Freshman orientation for your software

Now that you've done some bloatware pest control, you'll want to secure your other software and drivers by making sure they're up to date. Doing this can eliminate the risk of infection by entire classes and families of viruses and malware. The easiest way to do this is by downloading the Windows Update Assistant and following its prompts.

If you have any trouble with the automated process, there's a manual option:

1. Go to Start, then to Settings.

2. Select Update & Security, then select Windows Update.

Locals only

By default, logging in to Windows 10 means using your Microsoft account -- the same one you use for your Microsoft email. A feature of this type of login is that any changes you make to your settings while on your new Windows 10 machine will be automatically synced across all of your other Windows 10 devices.

That might seem like a convenient perk. It's not. It's essentially removing a bulkhead against multidevice compromise in the event something (or someone) affects your Microsoft account. So let's make sure you've got a unique local account login to use only on your new Windows 10 machine:

Read more: 20 pro tips to make Windows 10 work the way you want (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

1. Save any work currently open, then close the program you're using.

2. Go to Start, then Settings.

3. Click Accounts, then click Your email and accounts on the left-side column.

4. Click the link that says Sign in with a local account instead

5. When the prompt appears, type the password you currently use to log into your Microsoft account (the same password you currently use to unlock your laptop), and click Next

6. A new prompt will ask you to create a username, password and password hint. Once you've entered the text, click Next

7. Click Sign out and finish

This will bring you back to the machine's login screen, where you can enter your new password to log back in. At which point, you'll likely also notice a much faster login.

Shut down stalkerware

Windows 10 automatically tracks your location and monitors your behavior in order to sell advertising. Here's how to turn both of those features off to better protect your privacy:

1. Go to Start, then Settings.

2. Click Privacy, the icon that looks like a padlock.

3. Click Location, then click the On switch to turn location tracking off.

4. To disable ad tracking:

5. Go back to the Privacy screen you were just at.

6. Turn off the setting for Let apps use advertising ID to make ads more interesting to you based on your app activity.

Enable your firewall and antivirus

If you've used Windows for a while now, you're familiar with the Windows Defender Security Center. It's a good first step toward monitoring the overall health of your computer, but it's not going to be enough. One other layer of security is already built into Windows 10, and you should take advantage of it by enabling firewall and antivirus protection. Here's how:

1. Go back to your Control Panel, then to System and Security.

2. Click Windows Defender Firewall, then click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off in the sidebar.

3. Click the button that says Turn on Windows Defender Firewall under both the public network and private network settings.

4. Tick the box that says Notify me when Windows Defender Firewall blocks a new app

Once your firewall is up, head over to CNET's roundup of the best antivirus software for Windows 10 and shop around until you find one that suits your needs. You can also check out How to run Microsoft's Windows Defender on Chrome and Firefox

Ransomware rises as a national security threat as bigger targets fall

Cybercriminals are getting more sophisticated and brazen in ransomware attacks, freezing computer systems at school districts, major universities, police departments and hospitals. Now the US government is stepping up its approach to fighting computer crimes.

Last week, the White House convened an international counter-ransomware event. Representatives from more than 30 countries, including big US allies like the UK, Canada and Japan, participated in the virtual gathering. Notably absent: Russia, which the US and other countries blame for harboring and possibly encouraging the groups behind the attacks.

The group pledged to share information and work together to track down and prosecute the cybercriminals behind ransomware attacks. "Governments recognize the need for urgent action, common priorities, and complementary efforts to reduce the risk of ransomware," the participants said in a joint statement released at the end of the meeting.

The high-level government attention to ransomware underscores its growing reach. Once nothing more than garbage malware locking up the hard drives of the tech unsavvy or of small businesses running dated versions of Windows, ransomware has become a global digital scourge.

It also shows no sign of letting up. Over the weekend, an apparent ransomware attack locked down servers and work stations at Sinclair Broadcast Group. Data also was stolen from the TV station operator, though it's currently unclear what information it contained. The company is investigating.

Earlier this year, a major oil pipeline and a huge meat processors were hit by cybercriminals who demanded millions of dollars in ransom.  The attacks on Colonial Pipeline and JBS USA Holdings made headlines for weeks. They also marked a rise in the ambitions of cybercriminals and caught the attention of government officials and cybersecurity experts.

"It's really become a national security threat," Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told the Billington Cybersecurity Summit last week. "Everything is connected, everything is vulnerable, and the threat actors are just getting more sophisticated."

According to a report issued Oct. 15 by the Department of the Treasury, suspected ransomware payments reported by banks and other financial institutions totaled $590 million for the first six months of this year, easily surpassing the $416 million in suspicious payments reported for all of 2020.

Colonial Pipeline and JBS both forked over millions in ransom payments during that six-month period. The FBI was able to recover about $2.3 million of the $4.4 million paid by Colonial. Both ransoms were paid in bitcoin, a popular cryptocurrency.

Both attacks wreaked temporary havoc, pushing up the price of gasoline and meat as the companies lost control of their supplies.

"It's amusing to the outside world that America doesn't care until it's about oil and meat," says Chester Wisniewski, a principal research scientist for the global cybersecurity firm Sophos.

Wisniewski says earlier attacks would target a dozen or so different entities. They didn't grab the same kind of national headlines, however, because they were separate, smaller attacks.

By today's standards, cybercriminals also weren't as talented. They bought the malware online and sent it out without much research into their targets. Companies would often pay the ransom, try to keep things quiet and move on.

That started to change a few years ago. As malware became more sophisticated, cybercriminals began hacking into a company's financial records to determine exactly how much money the company would likely be able to pay. Now ransoms often reach millions of dollars.

And other attack-related costs far outweigh the actual ransom. Even if a company pays and has its data restored, it still has to bring in experts to rebuild its systems and confirm they're no longer compromised.

On top of that, an attack usually prompts a company to upgrade its cybersecurity defenses, another cost.

Sometimes it can be tough for an entity to know exactly how much cybersecurity it should install. Even though JBS is a big company, many experts wouldn't have previously considered it to be an obvious target for a cyberattack.

While acknowledging in a June statement that it did pay the equivalent of $11 million in ransom, JBS said it was able to "quickly resolve" the issues resulting from the attack, thanks to its "cybersecurity protocols, redundant systems and encrypted backup servers," adding that it spends $200 million annually on IT and employs more than 850 IT people around the world. The company didn't immediately return an email seeking further comment for this story.

Even small companies should follow best practices that'll lessen the chances of a cyberattack or the fallout from one, says David Cowen, managing director of US Cyber Security Services at professional-services company KPMG. And those practices can be as simple as making sure employees protect their access to systems with strong passwords and always use two-factor authentication

The government can help, too, he says.

"Look at what happened with Colonial Pipeline," Cowen said. "That group initially got paid but then they got tracked down and some of the money got returned. That's what happens when the government gets involved."

A recently introduced Senate bill would require critical infrastructure owners and operators, which would include companies like Colonial Pipeline, to report cyberattacks within three days.

In addition, nonprofits, businesses with more than 50 employees, and state and local governments would be required to notify the federal government within 24 hours if they make ransom payments.

Meanwhile, the Treasury Department says it'll sanction cryptocurrency exchanges, insurance companies and financial institutions that facilitate ransomware payments. It also said it was taking action against virtual currency exchange SUEX OTC for allegedly facilitating ransomware payments. Officials for SUEX couldn't be reached for comment.

Wisniewski, the cybersecurity researcher, says he likes the idea but questions how much good it'll do if the government doesn't take action against the countries behind the exchanges and financial institutions.

"Are we going to sanction China?" he asked. "I don't think so."

Apple Watch pocket watch is modern old-timeyness at its best

Steve Jobs famously restricted his own kids' iPad time, so he might also have approved of limiting direct skin contact with Apple's first wearable by taking the Apple Watch off the strap and putting it on a chain in one's pocket instead.

Leave it to fashion king Tom Ford to create an Apple Watch pocket watch that both Jobs and 19th-century CEOs might have approved of.

The customized watch was spotted by a few eagle-eyed fashion journalists, included New York Times fashion reporter Matthew Schneier, at an event that took place during the recent London Collections fashion week. Schneier shared the image on social media.

"I wouldn't wear an Apple Watch on my wrist," the Financial Times reported the Cartier-wearing Ford as saying. "But I wear it on a fob." Ford's spring 2016 collection features three-piece suits that he says reference the dapper aesthetic of "The Thomas Crown Affair," as well as "Steve McQueen mixed with Paul Newman."

Of course, taking the Apple Watch off your wrist does reduce its functionality quite a bit. Forget using most of those nifty health- and activity-tracking features while your 21st-century timepiece is rattling around in your pocket.

Perhaps someone really dedicated to both cutting-edge wearable technology and fashion accessories more befitting the world of Charles Dickens will take up the task of designing a jacket with a tight-fitting breast pocket and sheer lining that will still allow for you to measure and share your heartbeat from your Apple pocket watch.

What do you say, Mr. Ford? How about a new collection for the man who wants to look like the dude from the Monopoly board game without sacrificing being connected?

JCPenney Just Halved the Price on This Jacket for Moon Knight Cosplayers

One of the coolest parts of the new Marvel series Moon Knight is the costuming. The shifts between Moon Knight and Mr. Knight in the show are incredible, and don't even get me started on the costume reveal in the final episode of the series. These costumes, like so many things at Disney, start as concept sketches. That means not every concept makes it into the show, but that doesn't mean you can't roll up to the next convention with a slick version of Moon Knight based on one of those unused designs if you like how it looks. And now that costume illustrator Raphael Imhotep has taken to Instagram to show off some of those unused designs, it's easier to get some off-the-shelf pieces to modify.

Having a matching hood on a nice jacket isn't super common, but the folks at JCPenney have your back this week. This Slim Fit Hooded Sport Coat is both a great starting point and 50% off right now. That means you get one of the more challenging to find parts of this fit for $70 and you don't have to attach the hood yourself. Even better, the jacket is available in multiple lengths to fit any body type. Now you just need to focus on the face mask, and getting that knot right on the tie.

Wild VR gadget makes virtual objects feel solid at the touch of your hand

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University want to make virtual reality a little less virtual and a lot more physical with a device that puts the feel of solid objects at your fingertips.

Wireality is a shoulder-mounted haptic system that uses retractable wires attached to your hand to provide feedback during a VR experience. It works by stopping the motion of your hand to match the geometry of the virtual object you are "touching." A video shows the device in action.

"Our system enables tangible interactions with complex geometries, such as touching non-perpendicular, flat, and curved surfaces, wrapping fingers around railings and poles, and touching irregular objects," wrote lead engineer Cathy Fang on the project website.

Wireality builds on a concept that has already been explored—the use of strings to create haptic feedback. Previous takes on this idea used motors to control the strings. "The downside to motors is they consume a lot of power. They also are heavy," said Fang in a release on Tuesday.

Fang's version of the string-machine uses spring-loaded retractors—like the kind that keep ID badges attached to their owners—combined with a ratchet mechanism. "Only a small amount of electrical power is needed to engage the latch, so the system is energy efficient and can be operated on battery power," said Carnegie Mellon.

Wireality is lightweight and would be relatively inexpensive to produce. The research team estimates it could be built at scale for less than $50 (£40, AU$75). Fang sees a variety of potential uses for the system in gaming, visiting virtual museums or checking out retail goods.

The researchers published their work this month in the Association for Computing Machinery's Digital Library.

Virtual-reality equipment has been heading in the direction of providing more immersive physical feedback to users. We've seen haptic vests, tactile gloves and a full-body suit in recent years.

Engineers are still far from creating a full-on Star Trek holodeck experience where the virtual feels entirely real, but at least we're heading in that dreamy sci-fi direction.

Pixel 6 vs. Pixel 6 Pro: Every big difference you should know

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were both unveiled this fall, and the Pro model has since made CNET's list of best smartphones for 2021. If you're considering a new Pixel phone, you may be wondering what's the difference between the latest models. (If you already have a Pixel 6, you should really change these default settings.) The pair come with a collection of welcome upgrades including Google's own Tensor chip, but there are a few differences between each Pixel 6 model and the Pixel 5 series.

With the Pixel 6 lineup, Google seems to have course-corrected from the Pixel 5, which marked a departure from the pricey Pixel phones of years past. Out goes last year's midrange processor, in comes the company's years-in-the-making Tensor chip. Out went the generic, tried-and-tested hardware design. In comes a statement device with a signature camera bar running across the width of the chassis, which is available in splashy new colors including sorta seafoam (green) and sorta sunny (orange).

This year, there are two phones in the flagship Pixel series, the $599 (£599) Pixel 6 and $899 (£849) Pixel 6 Pro. Of the two phones, the more affordable Pixel 6 is priced to compete with the iPhone 13, Samsung Galaxy S21 as well as other Android midtier phones like the Motorola Edge (2021). Check the table below for a full pricing breakdown.

But beyond the fact that the Pixel 6 lineup is made by Google, boasts top-of-the-line cameras and the best Android update policy around, what also makes it an interesting buy is what's found inside the device's revamped chassis. At the heart of the Pixel 6 series is that aforementioned Tensor system-on-a-chip. Tensor promises up to 48 hours of battery life, better "real-time language translations, highly accurate voice transcription and high-end camera features like the ability to unblur the face of a person in motion," according to a report from CNET. This marks the first time the company has built its phones without a Qualcomm chipset, endeavoring instead to build its own in-house. And because Google created Tensor, it's extending security and OS support to Pixel owners to five years.

Read more:  Forget the iPhone 13. Google's Pixel 6 is surprisingly more exciting

By the way, if you want to cut to the chase, scroll down to our specs chart below, which compares the Pixel 6 series with the Pixel 5 series side-by-side.

Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro differences

As for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, there are similarities in many ways, but there are also a lot of differences. First of all, there's a $300 price difference between the base and pro models. For ponying up the extra cash, you get a slew of added features including a larger and higher-res screen, a bigger battery, support for both sub-6 and millimeter-wave 5G (the ultrafast but less reliable flavor of 5G) and the third rear camera, a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. As a reference point, that's higher than the iPhone 13's 3x optical zoom.

How does Pixel 6 compare to the Pixel 5 and 5A?

The Pixel 5 and 5A sit squarely in the midrange category, especially compared to the new Pixel 6 series. The Pixel 5 was Google's flagship phone last year, but its midrange position marked a departure from the pricey Pixel phones of years past. The Pixel 5 launched at $699 (£599, AU$999) and included 5G connectivity along with the fantastic cameras that have become the line's main selling point. But with that lowered asking price, Google chose to scale back on some features including the processor -- it went with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G.

Like all phones in Google's A series, the 5A is a stripped-down version of the flagship Pixel 5. Again, you can see how these phones stack up against each other in the specs chart below. You can also check out more on how the Pixel 6 and Pixel 5 compare here

10 Everyday Activities That Count as a Workout, According to Experts

It's a classic dilemma: We need a certain amount of exercise each week, but most of us have trouble motivating ourselves to actually do it. Only 23% of US adults meet all of the guidelines for weekly exercise, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, even though studies have found that people do understand the health benefits of working out.

So what gives? There are a lot of reasons that people don't exercise more. You may be short on time or energy, or you may not have the equipment that you feel like you need.

But while you might imagine sneakers, sports bras and weight benches when you think of "exercise," you don't have to hit the gym to meet the CDC's guidelines for physical activity. In fact, the CDC's 2018 National Health Statistics report, which contains that 23% statistic, doesn't mention the word "exercise" once. Instead, it's all about physical activity and movement -- whether for work, play or by doctor's orders.

For most of human history, physical activity was incorporated into people's daily lives in the form of labor and chores. These days, people spend a lot more time sitting still on couches, desk chairs and cars. But our lives still require physical movement each day, and it can be easier to meet your daily exercise quota with activities that you need to do anyway (like mowing the lawn) than set aside extra time to do a dedicated workout.

Rethinking your idea of exercise might inspire you to get even more active – and you're not necessarily missing out if you skip the gym in favor of sweeping. Here's what to know.

Short answer: Yes. "Your body can't tell the difference between bending over to pull out a weed and bending down to pick up a kettlebell," explains Robert S. Herbst, a personal trainer and world champion powerlifter.

Experts divide exercise into two categories: formal exercise and informal exercise. According to Mike Murphy, owner and head physiotherapist of Ireland's RAPID clinic, most people don't see informal exercise as, well, actual exercise. "This may be because informal exercise is difficult to quantify -- one hour walking seems easier to quantify than cleaning the house. But the reality is that many everyday tasks use up far more energy than light exercise," Murphy said.

"Everyday walking up and down stairs, to the shops, carrying things, hanging clothes out to dry, etc. -- all of these activities build up and over weeks and months these can significantly influence our energy balance (contributing significantly to weight gain or weight loss)," he continued.

In fact, even some formal workouts intentionally mimic the "primal movement patterns that represent our daily movement patterns for life," such as squatting, pushing, pulling and twisting, as Brian Nunez, Nike master trainer and performance coach, put it. These programs are known as "functional training." Meanwhile, a workout regimen that involves everyday activities rather than formal exercise is also called NEAT exercise, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis.

So, in short, don't discount all the physical activities that you engage in without intending to exercise. Non-exercise activities are a great way to not only improve your health, but also complete tasks more easily and reduce your risk of injury (no more pulling a muscle carrying the groceries in).

Here are 10 everyday activities that count as exercise, according to experts.

Yard or lawn care

Anyone who's ever mowed the lawn by hand in the height of summer knows that it's a true workout. Nunez explains: "Aside from the low impact and cardiovascular benefits, mowing the lawn requires a lot of functional movement primal patterns in the process of set up, mowing the lawn and clean up."

Other types of yard work that are a great workout include gardening, weeding, shoveling snow or leaves and much more.

Running errands

Who says your hour-long daily walk can't be through the aisles of Target? Seriously, though, errands often involve plenty of walking, carrying, lifting and other movements.

Cleaning the house

Cleaning the house can involve a wide range of physical movements -- going up and down stairs, carrying things from room to room, pushing and pulling the mop or broom and more.

Walking the dog

Need we say more? You may be more occupied with getting your pup exercise during their daily walk, but don't forget that you're getting your steps in at that time, too.

Walking, anywhere

You may have heard that sitting for long periods of time is bad for you. But getting up and moving your body every 30 minutes or so is helpful, and walking is great exercise, period -- whether it's to the mailbox, down the hall to wave to your coworker or to grab a snack.

The 'I'm late' sprint

If you take public transportation regularly, you probably get a ton of light- to moderate-intensity activity throughout your days just by getting to the bus or train. And if you're running late and have to jog a little, that's all the more effort expended.

Playing with kids

Got kids in your life? Getting involved in their play, rather than watching from the nearest couch or bench, will have you out of breath pretty quickly.

Dancing

Maybe you like to go out dancing, or maybe you're more of the "solo dance party in your pajamas" type. Either way, know that dancing can be a full-body workout and great cardio, too.

Laughing

Ever heard of "laughter yoga"? One 2014 study found that laughter yoga is a better ab workout than crunches or back lifting exercises. So, the more humor you find in your day, the better.

Having sex

Sexual activity is also a moderate-intensity workout. Though, of course, it depends on the specific activity, it uses even more energy than weight training.
